Keep It Clean

If you take to Google, the phrase “clean girl aesthetic” would show images of celebrities like Sophia Richie or Hailey Bieber. The “clean lifestyle” has taken influencers and supermodels by storm.  But what really is a clean girl in today’s day and age? Eating habits, exercise and a natural look — achieving this aesthetic is much simpler than you think.

Diet

This lifestyle starts with a good, well-rounded diet. Never restricting your body and fueling it with clean foods is the best way to keep it healthy. A plate full of proteins, carbs, fats, fiber and vitamins creates a plate full of color and health.

Eating intuitively is a popular concept  often suggested by nutritionists. Intuitive eating focuses on slowing down the pace of consumption and listening to your body. This allows you to eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full, ultimately avoiding the feeling of fullness caused by overeating. This new found way of listening to your body allows you to tune into what foods you are craving and find a way to satisfy it.

“Eating holistically is a good way to keep your body balanced, and I even find that it reduces my stress,” said Greta Heinemann, a freshman studying global business and marketing.

A healthy body is usually one that is nurtured and fed to its desire. There is no clean girl without a healthy body to support them.

Exercise

Moving your body is not only a significant factor in  achieving the clean girl lifestyle, but it is also a huge factor in overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, a little bit of exercise everyday  releases endorphins, which in turn improve emotional wellbeing.

Moving your body can be a good way to take a break from a day’s busy tasks and take some time to decompress. “Hot girl walks” are another sensation and are often talked about by the infamous clean girls. Simply put, a hot girl walk is just a walk outside, moving your body and getting some fresh air listening to your favorite songs or a new podcast.

“I love a good hot girl walk. I like to do them in the morning as my classes are in the evening. I get a chance to move my body and listen to my favorite songs. I feel so much more productive and it really sets my mood for the day,” said freshman industrial engineering major Harper Hite.

Pilates, yoga, walks and even a quick lift in the gym — whatever it is, moving your body is essential to being the healthy individual that is described in this clean girl aesthetic. Just remember, exercise to feel better, not just look better.

The Look

Making sure you’re always put together, and looking “clean” is important. Personal hygiene is obvious, but the key is in the details.

Slicked back hairstyles could be considered the most popular hairstyle right now. While there are products that can help you slick your hair back perfectly, hair masks are sometimes overlooked as an accessible product. When in between wash days, slicking back your hair with a hair mask can make your hair grow fuller and healthier.

The key to this clean girl aesthetic is all in the presentation. Minimal makeup is a look that almost every makeup influencer is trying to recreate.

“I have never been into wearing a lot of makeup, so I love the minimal look because I can keep it simple while still feeling all dressed up,” Hite said. Using minimal makeup, you can make yourself look slightly more put together without caking on a full face.

The use of only a few products like concealer, blush and bronzer can add to a perfectly simple look. The clean girl look is truly just an aesthetic, and all you have to do is  look the part. The best part of the minimal makeup look is that your favorite products are already part of the look.

For the products that aren’t yet a part of your daily look, just look around your house — you might own it already. Many clean girls implement Aquaphor healing ointment into their makeup routine.

“Aquaphor is the epitome of a clean girl skincare item. It literally can go on as mascara, brow gel and lipgloss,”  Heinemann said.

The hype around the clean girl aesthetic truly enforces the healthy lifestyle you probably lie to your doctor about having during your yearly checkups. Whether it’s eating more balanced foods, moving your body more often or just ditching your old makeup, achieving this look is so easy and can be such a healthy change to your lifestyle.
