Since the Irma Layoff, you may have forgotten how well we did at our first game of the season (and the only game we’ve played so far). Here’s a reminder of our success which will, hopefully, forecast the conclusion of our game tomorrow.
On Saturday, September 2nd, the Canes opened up strong against Bethune Cookman with a dominating 41-13 win.
Total Yards Surged // 555
Passing // Starting QB Malik Rosier had a strong start to the season, throwing for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Rushing // Running Back Mark Walton proved to be one of the best in college football with 148 yards on 16 carries and 2 touchdowns.
Defense // Miami stayed strong with a couple of hiccups, as expected for a first game. They limited the Wildcats to only one touchdown and 350 yards. Although the defense let up a sizable amount of yards, they truly held their grown keeping the other team away from the end-zone — signs of a dominant defense. Highlight: an incredible hit by defensive back Amari Carter, resulting in a fumble recovered by the canes.
Off the Field
In Miami fashion, the Canes dominated social media with the precious turnover chain. The chain was awarded to defensive back Malek Young for his interception and since it has become a viral sensation. This chain brought back memories of the dominant teams in the 1980’s and the early 2000’s. Hopefully we see many players wear the chain in the upcoming year.
Tailgate Talk
And finally a few quotes we heard while sitting in the student section… and yes they were actually said at the Miami v. Bethune Cookman game.
“Can your eyes get sunburnt? No seriously.”
“Which way are they supposed to be running?”
“Mr. camera man look over here! Get me on the big screen! It took me four hours to cut this t-shirt I deserve airtime.”
“Why is there a guy dressed in a full suit of University of Miami themed armor?”
“Um, excuse me can you not do the smoke zone near my son, he’s allergic to carbon dioxide.”
“Ma’am that’s impossible, we breath carbon dioxide.”
