Campus Munchies: The Rat

We hope you’re all getting back into the groove of school. While doing so, if you’re looking for a spot to fill your stomach and just vibe out on campus, look no further than University of Miami’s on campus bar, the Rathskellar, commonly referred to as The Rat. (or #AtTheRat)

You could not ask for a more beautiful restaurant/bar on campus. The gliders, the palm trees, the lake, the large and shiny glass windows, I mean c’mon. Not only can you bask outside in the sun, you can also cool down inside where there are plenty of seats, couches to lounge on, free popcorn, and an upstairs area that includes barstool seating, pool tables and an unreal elevated view of Lake Osceola. All ages are welcome at the Rat however, you do need to be at least 21 if you choose to consume alcohol. With that being said, there are absolutely no age restrictions on the delicious food.

Formally known as Gautier Hall, The Rathskeller was opened on December 18, 1972 where the Shalala Student Center is located now. It was it’s own building with even a bowling alley at one point. After the start of the construction for SCC, it was temporarily moved into the University Center and finally to it’s current location which opened in 2013. The Rat features game shows and events, as well as Trivia every Tuesday night.

The full menu was just reintroduced and is in full effect, with a varying daily special for only $3.99! Here are some of our favorite picks that are on the smaller/snackier side, but also provide a generous bang for your buck:

  • No-Yes fries (delicious to eat w/side of ranch)
  • Sweet potato fries (pair amazingly with ketchup)
  • Ham Croquettas with Cilantro mayo
  • Mini breakfast quesadilla (Wednesday Special)
  • Free Popcorn
