When it comes to statement pieces, there’s nothing quite like a designer watch to announce your presence. Fortunately for our sense of romance and fashion fantasy, and not so fortunately for our bank accounts, luxury watches are back in the trend-o-sphere with a vengeance (did they ever really leave?). With minimal styling, such a watch suggests of its wearer a chic sophistication and touch of class in a way no other accessory can replicate. They say a picture is worth a thousand words; well I’m going to argue the same for watches.
Traditionally, watches have been considered a status symbol, announcing to the world something about the wearer. This has never been more true than in 2014 – an age in which an iPhone (and its digital time-telling capabilities) is never more than a stone’s throw away. Just the fact that you are wearing a watch suggests something about you and your style orientation. Lesson learned: your watch says something about you so choose it wisely!
Opt for a piece that reflects your everyday personality and style. Whether you intend to use your watch as a status symbol or just for good ol’ timekeeping, there are many ways to make your watch the apple of everyone’s eye and the statement piece of your outfit.
If you’re going for the chunky metal, vintage-style watch (my personal favorite), keep the rest of your jewelry scarce and subtle, if any at all. Use your discretion making sure other statement pieces compliment, not compete with, the star of the show. The watch speaks for itself, so let it be heard.
Oversized watches have a masculine and sporty vibe—try pairing with something feminine for a contrast – maybe a little sundress or even a maxi. Toughen up the footwear with some boots. Stick to solid colors for maximum impact.
If your fashion tastes place you on the dainty and understated bracelet or wrap-around style watch spectrum, try stacking them with lots of bracelets for a chic and polished bohemian look. Pair with a sleeveless number to best show off your arm candy.
Dainty and elegant, or bold and strong? Only you can decide. Remember, virtually everyone owns an iPhone, but most definitely not everyone owns a fabulous, unique and utterly compelling watch.
