Alright, already, the show goes on during a sun shower as Hurricane Productions and WVUM reveal the 2012 Homecoming concert’s performing artists. Students gathered at The Rock on Tuesday September 18th to listen to jams played by WVUM DJ Max Gall, and to be the first to hear that RJD2 will be opening for Lupe Fiasco on Friday October 19th.
Hurricane Productions selects the featured artist for Homecoming concerts by conducting surveys asking what artists students want to see perform. Amongst the EDM artists and indie rock groups within the surveys, a hip-hop trend has been established amongst student selections. Last year, hip-hop artist Ludacris took the stage at the Bank United Center. It seems as though hip-hop has prevailed once again.
When asked about the opening act, Julian Malagon, Hurricane Productions Concerts Chair and host of the Hip-Hop Shop on WVUM was just as excited as he was with Fiasco.
“We play RJD2 on the radio station all the time. [RJD2] is a very successful hip-hop producer and DJ who experiments with EDM,” Malagon said. “I’ve heard rumors he comes out dressed in full robot garb, so I’m looking forward to that.”
As for the fans of Lupe Fiasco’s early work, the artist is releasing a new album titled, Food and Liquor 2: Great American Rap Album Pt. 1.
Free tickets for the Homecoming Concert will be available to students with a valid cane card on Oct. 1.
