Next time you pass by dozens of students conversing strictly in English, consider it un día raro. The number of languages found on the University of Miami campus is remarkable. However, it is the unique lengua of Spanglish, a combination of English and Spanish, that stands out most at “The U.”
Students often overhear “Let’s go to la playa” or “Good morning, ¿Cómo estás?” Campus-wide, Spanglish is a routine part of our daily lives. Freshman Ingrid Meira has already begun to experience Spanglish on campus. “I hear Spanglish every other day; it can be heard almost anywhere on campus – the library, food court,” Meira said.
Even if you are not a native Spanish speaker, studying in Miami for four years might just improve your vocabulario. And con todas las bellezas walking around campus, you will find the combination of the two lenguas is just that: beautiful
