Super Bowl LII was a thriller right to the end as Tom Brady’s Hail Mary hit the ground as time expired to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots.
In a game that saw more offense than any other postseason game in history, Tom Brady threw for a record breaking 505 yards despite losing one of his top targets in Brandin Cooks in the first quarter. The game went back and forth as there was only one punt in the entire game. With two and a half minutes remaining, down 38-33, Tom Brady got the ball back poised to lead a game-winning drive when the first sack of the game came from Brandon Graham, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Eagles. Jake Elliot of the Eagles kicked a field goal with a little over a minute remaining to go up 41-33 and seal the win.
In a rematch of Super Bowl XXIX, the Philadelphia Eagles finally won their franchise’s first Super Bowl as they thwarted Tom Brady and Bill Belichek’s attempt at a record-breaking sixth ring. At the start of the season no one had the Eagles pegged for a Super Bowl run never mind a playoff appearance. New England’s road to the Super Bowl, however, was all anyone could talk about, as back-to-back Super Bowls appeared inevitable. The Cinderella Story was completed as Nick Foles dominated en route to a Super Bowl MVP. In week 14, the Eagles’ star quarterback and MVP candidate, Carson Wentz suffered a season ending knee injury, and the Eagles Super Bowl chances looked deflated. The Eagles embraced their underdog status as they became only the third team in the Super Bowl Era to win the Super Bowl as underdogs in each of their postseason games, joining the 1980 Raiders and 2007 Giants.
