Spring Break Without Breaking the Bank

We’ve all been there: three weeks before spring break without a single Airbnb booked, plane ticket bought or activity planned. So where can you “spraaang break” James Franco-style without breaking the bank? Believe it or not, there are actually plenty of places you can live it up during spring break without blowing your summer trip fund completely. Especially considering the rise of traveling apps like Hopper and Airbnb designed to save you money, your hardest job should be to figure out whether you want to bundle up in Colorado or catch some rays in Cozumel.

Let’s start with the basics: getting there. I highly recommend using Hopper or Skyscanner to book those pesky flights (like… now). Aside from forecasting the least and most expensive times to travel to your selected destination, these apps will even notify you when it’s time to book because tickets are the cheapest. Additionally, you can pick a time you want to travel and they’ll show you all the destinations available those dates for a rock-bottom price- Greece for $242, anyone?

Okay, once you’re there you’re going to need a place to sleep, unless you plan on cozying up with strangers every night as you make your way through Mexico… no judgment! Hotels are so passé- Airbnbs and hostiles are the new Ritz. Some Airbnbs are as cheap as $50 a night and if you’re splitting that with four people… that’s $12 a person, a night. If you plan on going abroad for spring break, your best bet is to research hostiles ahead of time and plan your stay.

Now for the fun stuff! Where in the world are you going to capture that perfect #SpringBreakForever pic? Well, the world is your oyster. You could always beach it up in Cancun or Punta Cana, but maybe you want to do something a little less, what’s the word, basic? How about a week of city exploring in San Francisco or San Antonio? Or what about trying something New… Orleans! Did you know that there are no open container laws in New Orleans? Just some food (and drink) for thought. If someone in your spring break party has a car, you could always road trip it up and use flight money to fill up the tank instead. If you leave from UM, a fun, and scenic, route is to go up the state through Savannah, Charleston and Asheville. You don’t have to stop there though… just make sure you give yourself enough time to get back by March 19th!
