Any escape from the dining halls is a treat and luckily, Miami seems to have finally caught onto the wonders of some great southern comfort food. These places are the ones you should check out now that you’ve returned from break and need to satiate your intense cravings.
The Dutch is an American restaurant that delivers Southern roots-inspired dishes. Many items on the menu have a southern punch, with a big city twist. You’ll have a hard time deciding what to order since everything on the menu will make your mouth water. If you’re stuck, go with the Korean fried chicken sandwich.
Yardbird has become a Miami favorite since its opening in 2011. The South Beach restaurant runs on its devotion to true southern cooking, freshly grown ingredients and of course unwavering hospitality. There’s truly no going wrong here, although the restaurant’s most popular dish is, understandably so, the chicken n’ watermelon n’ waffles.
Blue Collar is a small restaurant that likes to keep it classic. From shrimp and grits to mac-and-cheese to bacon braised cabbage, this place has just the dish to end that post-Thanksgiving slump. Other items that are sure to please can be found on the restaurant’s ‘daily’ chalkboard always with some variation of ribs, parm or brasie.
Swine is operated by the same group, known as 50 Eggs, who own the aforementioned Yardhouse. As the name might suggest, this establishment places emphasis upon its pork based dishes rather than the chicken dishes found at Yardhouse. The same farm-fresh philosophy is at work and made obvious through Swine’s delightful entrees. The bourbon glazed big chop is a real homerun, but the even bigger grand slam has got to be their suckling pig porchetta.
Whisk is a great place to try out when you’re really, really hungry. Why? The portions are generous and the food is great. The Miami cuisine keeps it simple with southern favorites like fried chicken, shrimp n’ grits, and cornbread. One of the best rated and most talked about dishes is the fried green tomato sandwich.
