Some Like It Hot: Miami Spice 2013

Edge Steak and Bar

Miami is well known for beaches, bikinis and (adult) beverages; this has played a big role in making Miami, well, Miami. But whatever happened to our culinary credibility? Cities like New Orleans, New York, Chicago and Atlanta are getting all the credit – if you have a style of pizza named after you, you know you’ve made it. In our eyes, though, Miami is fighting for the attention of foodies everywhere, packing a delicious punch in every neighborhood. We made a statement with the food truck craze a few years ago and have recently seen, or rather tasted, amazing additions to the local restaurant scene.

But in typical Miami fashion, most of these local hot spots are not exactly affordable for the average college student. Sometimes it comes down to being able to afford rent or dinner, and Ramen noodles are just so much easier to make. Lucky for us, Miami Spice kicks off today, August 1st, until September 30th. For the twelfth year, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau has gathered over 170 local luxury and fine dining restaurants to offer discounted, 3-course meals. Granted, you pick a choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert from a set menu, but there are so many participating restaurants you are sure to find a restaurant to satisfy your craving. Lunch options are priced at $19 or $23; dinner is priced at $33 or $39. For a complete list of participating restaurants, check out WWW.ILOVEMIAMISPICE.COM where you can filter options by location, price, day of the week and time. You can also check out the offered menu items and even read customer reviews. Wherever you choose to eat, we highly recommend reservations.

If you’re new in town or if you are a born-and-raised Miamian, this is a great way to experience this beautiful – and tasty – city we call home. Get out of your comfort zone and challenge your palate. Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with the grilled octopus from Bulla Gastrobar or the seaweed salad at Sawa Restaurant and Lounge.

And if you do want to bring out your inner foodie ASAP, check out the official Iron Fork Kickoff Event held tonight in which two of Miami’s best chefs will go “pot-to-pot” in a cookoff. Miami Spice partnered with the Miami New Times for this delicious competition perfect for any gourmet. To purchase tickets, visit: http://microapp.miaminewtimes.com/ironfork/2013.

Eat up, Friends!
