With the number of elections happening in the upcoming months, it is extremely important that, as students, we stay politically informed. To help University of Miami students in this responsibility, Senator and University of Miami alumna Miguel Diaz de la Portilla came and spoke to the Republican Club this past Tuesday night about his campaign, how to get involved in politics from a young age, and what being a UM grad has done for his career.
Senator Portilla is a double University of Miami grad. With undergraduate degrees in English literature and philosophy as well as a graduate degree from the University of Miami Law school, Mr. Portilla clearly knows that it’s All About the U. Senator Portilla, when asked how his education influenced his career said, “the education at the University of Miami is second to none.” Mr. Portilla also briefly praised the small class sizes, especially those that were for his philosophy major. The Senator also mentioned that he still uses argument tactics and appeals that he learned from his education in philosophy here at the U.
Senator Portilla has been an extremely active politician in Miami from the young age of 29, and stresses that it is never to early to start to chase your dreams. He says that it is very important to get involved in any way you can from as early of an age as you can. From his teenage years on, he was volunteering for campaigns, putting up signs for them, and going door-to-door to promote his favorite candidates.
When asked who inspired Mr. Portilla to go into politics, he immediately responded with “Ronald Reagan.” The Senator went on to describe just how the former president Reagan helped the economy tremendously by following his goal to create a country whose economy supports entrepreneurship and individualism, and how these beliefs align with his own.
Whatever your beliefs and opinions are, however, just make sure to bring them to the polls this fall!
