Check out this slideshow of images from the show

On October 19th, the University of Miami welcomed Hip-Hop artist Lupe Fiasco for the 2012 Homecoming Concert. In case you missed it, or if you’re just looking to relive it all, here’s a recap of the night brought to you by us, with a little help from ‘U’:

In the spirit of Fiasco and going against what is assumed, this isn’t your traditional review. Who cares what I thought about the event?(I thought it was the epitome of epicness by the way). You care about how ‘U’ felt about this year’s homecoming acts. So, we begin with the beginning from those who were there:

There was a lot of hype leading up to this event, and a lot of people had a lot to say. Some just went with the obvious.

Lupe Fiasco will be at the University of Miami today.Kevin Bell

Some had a friend to thank for their opportunity to attend the concert.

On Friday, I will finally get to see one of my favorite rapper perform…big thanks to Domenica CalecaPeter Beckford

For others, even though Fiasco might not be their top pick for favorite rapper, they still recognize the creativity and talent Fiasco has in working with lyrical content and flow; his brand of conscious rap.

My 2nd favorite rapper performs at our Homecoming tomorrow. Good choice University of Miami! His latest single is one of the most important and provocative songs in hip hop history. Adolescent Psychology meets Identity Development. I see you Lupe Fiasco! I might have an extra ticket if someone wants to go. RJD2 will be there too!Amir Whitaker

Some just sold their ticket.  I’m sure we all have seen the various posts that have spammed Facebook groups in recent days. Tsk. Tsk.

Discussing the actual concert, I felt bad for opening act RJD2. Some of the students in the crowd around me, I thought, were dense in just complaining about the fact that he was a “white guy” wearing a “striped polo” and that “anyone can be a DJ these days”. Some just didn’t get and shouted for Fiasco to come on stage. Personally, I enjoyed RJD2’s set. Maybe that’s due to the fact that I can only imagine how hard it is to coordinate everything he was doing up there(spinning REAL vinyls? Not pre-mixed? A DJ?) However, these  few comments tell a different story; one even apologizes for the crowd:

#RJD2 is a legend and deserves more respect. Awesome set. #hiphop @ BankUnited Center http://instagr.am/p/Q_esQxMedg/Andrew Quinzi
@rjd2 The crowd was wack…but you were awesome. Thank you.Rave King
And although his performance was cut short, rjd2 was amazing. So talented.JG

As far as Fiasco goes, he owned his stage. Again, it’s easy for me to say that the show was a hit with the students, but instead of me taking that route, here are some reactions voiced publicly on the internet and not put through the filtering process that is an interview; in the audience’s own words:

@LupeFiasco was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and I’ve been to quite a few. He has so much passion and energy. #amazingElizabeth de Armas
@lupefiasco good shit tonight man. You put on a hell of a show http://pic.twitter.com/eWXCpkhUAndrew Yerger
RT @jessekuehner: @LupeFiasco you killed it tonight!!! Thanks for coming to The U! http://pic.twitter.com/VLIMvLtTBo Montarroyos

A highlight for me during the show was when Fiasco made sure to credit the phenomenal backing band that truly added a special element to the show.  They matched Fiasco’s energy on stage and at one point during the show got to show off their skills. Here’s the drummer, who himself rocked a killer drum solo.

RT @NfiniteP: Thank you Sooo much @BamAlexander ! I had a great time at the @LupeFiasco concert! You’re amaaaaaazing on the drums! http://pic.twitter.com/zalw1AxRBAM ALEXANDER

Fiasco of course did reference the whole reason why he was there that night. But, come on Lupe, you probably knew who we were playing for homecoming but you went the safe route with the classic “Whoever it is, you’ll kick their ass, right?” bit.
Hopefully though, the answer to that question will be “yes”. Just like the answer to the question of whether or not Hurricane Productions made an excellent choice for this year’s headlining act.

To end, a final word from Julian Malagon, HP concerts chair:

Thanks to all that came out to the @LupeFiasco concert and thanks for @univmiami for letting us put it on. Hope you all enjoyed it!Wile E. Coyote
