Questions I Had During the 2018 Grammys

The Grammys are probably one of my favorite award shows because it’s basically just a concert with all the top artists of the year. This year, I watched the Grammys like any millennial would: while doing something else.

I brought out my laptop to attempt some homework while I watched which meant that any question that came to my mind while watching the Grammys was immediately answered. If you weren’t lucky enough to have the internet at your fingertips while you sang along to “Finesse,” don’t fret, I have compiled all the answers for you.

Q: Can this please be the last time I hear “Despacito”?

A: Probably not.

Q: What is that thing hanging off of Bruno Mars’ sneaker?

A: A zip tie. His sneakers were from a collaboration between Virgil Abloh and Nike. Bruno was wearing “The Ten” Nike Prestos and his backup dancers were wearing the Virgil x Air Jordan 1s–both of which can sell for over a thousand dollars.

Q: How did Carbi B become famous?

A: A lot of people know that Cardi B was once a stripper but may not know that she entered into that profession to escape an abusive relationship. Before her rap career, she also gained a lot of her fame from Vine and other social media before being “discovered.” Read her whole story here.

Q: Did Dave Chapelle win for his Netflix special?

A: Yes! He won for “The Age of Spin & Deep in the Heart of Texas” which is on Netflix and is definitely a must-see.

Q: Is Donald Glover (formerly known as Childish Gambino) even real?

A: The jury is still out on this one.

Q: Who is that little kid singing with Donald Glover?

A: His name is J.D. McCrary; he is only nine years old and is supposed to star as young Simba in the live-action remake of “The Lion King.” So, basically, he’s already accomplished more in his nine years of living than many of us ever will.

Q: How old is ___?

A: P!nk is 38 years old. I, for one, thought she was closer to 50 and was surprised by how young she looked; 38 makes more sense. Sting is 66 years old which actually is surprising because he looks great. Bono is 57 years old, but looks older than Sting.

Q: Why are Shaggy and Sting performing together?

A: No one knows. But it worked? Maybe?

Q: What song is U2 singing?

A: “Get Out of Your Own Way” which actually features Kendrick Lamar at the end. If your next question was “Should I start listening to U2 again?” the answer is yes.

Q: What musical is “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from?

A: Evita. (Did anyone else cry during Patti Lupone’s performance? Just me?)

Q: What’s the difference between Song of the Year and Record of the Year?

A: Yes, they answered this during the actual Grammys, but like I said I was multi-tasking so I missed it and had to look it up five seconds later. Song of the Year recognizes the songwriters while Record of the Year recognizes the performance of the artists along with the work of the producers, recording engineers, and mixers.

Final Q: Will I ever be as cool as Bruno Mars?

A: No.
