Pop-Up Piano Opens for Art Basel

December in Miami is all about glamour and sophistication as it one-ups the sexiness of the city. Before the month kicks off with Art Basel from December 6-9, Pop-up Piano Miami is back for a second year and gave a sneak preview of their piano creations at a pre-Art Basel mixer at Miami Iron Side this past Wednesday.

Pop-up Miami is a public arts project that supports local music and arts programs. Eight pianos were donated by Steinway & Sons Miami and were crafted by eight different artists. The pianos are being placed across Wynwood, Midtown, Downtown Miami and the Design District and scheduled to have pop-up performances by several talented musicians. The pianos are donated to local charities and music programs that face funding shortages as Art Basel comes to a close.

“It’s great to be back again for the second time,” said Meris Thomas, a member of Pop-up Piano Miami. “After experiencing the after effects (of Pop-up Piano) and what the arts can accomplish we wanted to share the experience once more.”

Addition to the pianos, Pop-up Piano Miami will also be holding a charity concert at the PERRY South Beach Hotel on December 5 that will benefit Friends of the New World Symphony and the Kimbanguist Symphony Orchestra, Central Africa’s only symphony orchestra. “It’s exciting to have amazing musicians and the owners of the PERRY back us up 100%.” said Thomas. The event features performances by internationally acclaimed singer, Yuna and rock jazz pianist, Elew. This intimate classy night is not to be missed… even if it’s finals week.
