Oscar Predictions

If you’re a movie buff like me, your countdown to March 4 has already started. The 90th Academy Awards will definitely be a show with some of the most praised motion pictures going head to head in the race for first place and one of the holy golden statuettes, better known as an Oscar.

Nominations for the Oscars were put out on January 23rd, with Shape of Water, Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri snagging the most nominations — 13, 8 and 7 respectively. Some of the other acclaimed films included Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and of course the much-admired Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele. For the full list of the nominations, click here .

The rumor mill is already buzzing with predictions, on who is going to win. If you’re anything like me, procrastination is your best friend and movies always come first. So over the last two weekends, I sat in front of my TV with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s Chunk Monkey and binge watched all the movies on the nomination list, making a few predictions of my own for a few of the categories.

Best Picture: The Shape of Water

Now I may be bias because of my obsession with Octavia Spencer, but this movie really blew me away. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, it brings a unique take on love, war, fantasy and friendship. Guillermo del Toro, the director, did an amazing job of balancing all these aspects!

Lead Actor: Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name

Not only was the background of this movie absolutely breathtaking, Chalamet’s performance was out of this world. He took on the very delicate role of a teenager trying to navigate his way through an intimate relationship with an older man and hit it out of the ball park. The emotions he portrayed could be felt vividly by the audience.

Lead Actress: Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird

This movie has to be my new favorite! Saoise Ronan and Laurie Metcalf perfectly depict the development of a mother-daughter relationship all of us go through in high school flawlessly. Ronan really immersed herself in the role and spoke to the audience! She’s so talented as an actor, but after watching multiple interviews, I’m even more in love with her for her personality and her humbleness throughout her fame.

Director: Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk

Nolan has always been a respected director but after this movie, I think his name is going to become one people talk about for decades. Dunkirk was astounding not only because of its amazing story line and fine actors (they cast Harry Styles, that alone is a reason to win), but also the technicality of each scene was far more than just impressive.

Now its your turn to go out and watch these movies and make some predictions!
