Ordering #AtTheRat

It’s a rite of passage for all University of Miami students to eat at the Rathskeller or, as we like to call it, “The Rat.” It was founded in 1973, but remodeled and reopened inside the Shalala Student Center. It’s the perfect place to hang out in between classes with friends, grab a quick bite, or watch the away football games. To narrow it down, we’ve picked the five dishes everyone must try at least once.

Hecht Fried Mac & Cheese Bites

Whether you get it as an appetizer to share with friends or all for yourself, you will not regret it. These Mac & Cheese Bites are the perfect consistency! They are crunchy on the outside, but soft and cheesy on the inside. Bonus tip: pair it with ranch sauce, lots of ranch sauce.

Quesadillas

Since we are in Miami, there had to be a Latin option and what’s better than quesadillas. There are five different types: cheese, Carole’s veggie, chicken, buffalo chicken and steak. The quesadillas are a quick, easy, and cheesy bite.

Burgers

Of course, burgers are essential. The hardest part will be picking a burger out of the seven burgers the Rat offers. They even include a vegetarian option.  You get your choice of carrots, celery, or fries (we highly recommend the sweet potato fries). Don’t be surprised how quickly you’ll go back for another one.

At the Rathskeller, there are multiple burgers to sink your teeth into. Pick from the original Rat burger or if you’re feeling adventurous, the No-Yes Burger. Source: Instagram @umrathskeller.

Salads and Chop Chops

Trying to eat healthy for the year-round bikini season in Miami? Check out the Mark Light Caesar Salad and Buffalo Chicken Salad. If you are in the mood for something a little more filling, the Chop Chops are to die for. Pick from the Cuban Chop Chop with pork or the “Rat” Style Chop Chop with chicken or steak. All of these options include yellow rice and curry sauce or cilantro dressing.

Pro tip: Think the Rat is expensive? Check out their lunch specials for $3.99 or their Grilled Cheese special from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for only $2.99.
