Hurricanes lose to Fighting Irish

Sunday morning, our Miami Hurricanes fell 0-3 to Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish women’s volleyball team at the first home game of the season.

The battle went down at Hecht Athletic Complex. Set 1 started off with the ‘Canes in the lead. By 15-12, the first timeout was called and the lead was lost, never to be regained again. Set 1, finished at 22-25, Set 2, 15-25, Set 3, 15-25. Unfortunately, due to mistakes on our side and incredible blocks from the Fighting Irish, the game ended quickly.

As a past volleyball player and fan of the sport myself, I do want to recognize that our ladies had some incredible plays. Olga Strantzali,#12, stood out, leading the ‘Canes with 17 kills for Sunday’s match. At the start of the third set, upon returning from an intermission, the Hurricanes fought hard – with almost no balls hitting the floor, many thanks to libero, #2, Sylvia Hernandez.

For a Sunday morning, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many ‘Canes fans in attendance. My sister, Kendel, who was visiting from out of town said, “The school spirit was better than I expected! UMiami played a great offensive game despite the loss”.

It was an off-day for our Hurricanes for sure, but that shouldn’t stop us spectators from going out to support at the next game! I hope to see even more ’Canes fans at 7 p.m. this Friday, September 30th against Boston College.
