How to Pretend Florida Has Seasons

Admittedly, it’s hard to complain about living in Florida.

Permanent staycations, beaches and sunshine all year round makes for a pretty easygoing crowd. Despite the obvious perks, there does come a time of year when us Floridians face a very serious dilemma: how to dress for fall.

Though it’s rumored that Florida residents only wear flip flops and that pants are practically non-existent, that isn’t necessarily the truth for our fashion lovers. Instead we must learn to adapt to the sweltering hot autumn days and compromise on what is considered to be typical fall fashion.

So before you risk a heat stroke trying to rock the classic fall trends, try swapping out these pieces to look and stay cool:

Ankle boots might be the most versatile fall accessory. Wear them with a skirt on a hot Miami day or with jeans when it starts to get cooler. //Source: Instagram @nordstromdadeland

For others: Knee high riding boots or combat boots

For Floridians: Ankle boots

There’s no need to be even slightly resentful of northerners’ fall fashion pieces when ankle boots are such a hot trend right now! Try wearing a pair of these lighter boots or maybe even a pair with a peep-toe. Go ahead, frostbite doesn’t exist down here.

Rain coats are extremely useful when the weather is being temperamental. Getting one in a subdued fall color makes for a practical yet sophisticated look. //Source: Instagram @ducktailraincoats

For others: Coats

For Floridians: Rain jacket

A coat in 90-degree weather? Definitely not a bright idea. The only thing with long sleeves that you will need is a rain jacket. After all, hurricane season does extend through fall. Simply find a rain jacket in the warm colors and tones of fall and you’ll be set.

A faux leather skirt adds a little edge to your fall wardrobe. Faux leather allows you to rock the trend without melting. //Source: Instagram @collagevintage

For others: Leather jacket

For Floridians: Faux leather skirt or leggings

Faux leather is thinner and lighter and it is still possible to find nice looking pieces. Opting for faux means that you are still able to capture this aspect of fall fashion without giving up your personal comfort.

A wide brim hat is the perfect way to pull together your fall outfit. They come in lots of different sizes and colors so you can find the one that works best for you. //Source: Instagram @collagevintage

For others: Wide brim wool hat

For Floridians: Wide brim wool hat

Northerners and Floridians wearing the same thing during the fall months? With this particular fall fashion staple, it’s actually possible. The only difference here is the purpose. For northerners, a wide brim wool hat can help to keep ears warm and block from the frigid wind. In Florida the same hat is used to shade your face from the burning hot sun. Either way, it’s a must have for your fall wardrobe.
