Football, Pub Crawls and Flugtag, Oh My!

Distraction understands football is not for everyone. Here are a few alternate ways to spend your day as the Hurricanes take on the Savannah State Tigers:

Pub crawl…on a bicycle?
Yep, you read that right. There’s the Beer Snob Bicycle Pub Crawl this Saturday and it’s the perfect way to celebrate the fall and Oktoberfest with good beers and fun times.

The bicycle pub crawl starts at 5 Napkin Grill on South Beach at 4p.m and will continue to The Abbey Brewing Company, World of Beer, Gramps and, finally, The Filling Station.

The crawl ends around 9:30p.m near the Government Center Metrorail Station, which is helpful for those who are too drunk to bike or drive home. Safety first!

This is the perfect event for adventurous types but really, anyone would love this. The Miami New Times named the crawl the Best Urban Bike ride of 2011 and the Best Activity While Intoxicated in 2010 (yes that is a real award that exists, we checked). There is still no award for keeping your composure and dignity while drinking in the Grove, but whatever. Soon.

The crawl will cover about 9 miles. (Hey, you can burn off a beer!) It is recommended that bikers bring a bike lock and a flashlight, or download a flashlight app. The event is 21+. Always remember to drink responsibly, ride safely and respect traffic laws. HAVE FUN!

Just like the riders from the monthly Critical Mass, riders on Saturday’s Bicycle Pub Crawl will end their bike ride at The Filling Station, one of downtown Miami’s hidden culinary gems.

FLUGTAG IS BACK!
If you’d rather watch giant flying machines epically crash into the ocean then we’ve got an event for you. It’s called the Red Bull Flugtag and it is just plain awesome. The festivities start at 12p.m at Bayfront Park and this year’s Flugtag is the first national Red Bull Flugtag! So you kind of have to be there because this is history in the making.

Here is the Flugtag rundown: Teams come together to create a flying apparatus in hopes that their flying machine will travel the furthest distance. Each team presents its creation (there is usually a hilarious song and dance involved) and then the crew boards their vessel and prepares to plunge into the sea. The team that goes the furthest distance before hitting the water wins. Everybody crashes into the water at some point so you are guaranteed excitement.

Cities around the country will be competing for the furthest traveling machine. Even UM ASME, the University of Miami’s student section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, will be competing this weekend. So cheer on your team and let’s show every other city that Miami is the best city in the nation.

Whatever your plans this weekend, share you pictures and tweets with @DistractionUM. Your fun is our fun.

The University of Miami’s student section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers competed in last year’s Redbull Flugtag with an Angry Birds theme.
