Two of the delicious creations from Ms. Cheezious, one of the food trucks that will be at Gourmet Food Truck Night on Friday, October 4 at the University of Miami. (We highly recommend the fried chicken and waffle sandwich and the goat cheese and prosciutto, both pictured.)
There comes a time when you have to disregard your diet and just eat; that time is this weekend. Thanks to the foodie gods, all the stars aligned to pack this weekend full of enticing culinary experiences. If you really need an excuse, think of it as a way to celebrate another ‘Canes win or to mourn the loss of Breaking Bad. So put on your stretchy pants and check out something new.
Shacktoberfest – Friday, October 4th through Sunday, October 13th
We’re not quite sure what the New York City based Shake Shack has to do with German Oktoberfest, but we’re oddly ok with it. Besides the regular menu items, Shake Shack will be offering seasonal meals like the Cheddar Brat Burger and the Polish Sausage starting Friday. The dessert, a German chocolate pecan concrete, sounds amazing: Chocolate frozen custard blended with coconut-pecan caramel and chocolate truffle cookie dough. Get the double and share it with yourself. And who can forget the bier beer? Order a 25oz. Shake Shack Bier Stein of either Brooklyn Brewery’s Oktoberfest brew or ShackMeister Ale® for $10. Not only do you keep the mug, you get $7 refills throughout the entire Okterberfestivities. As if you needed any justification, that’s $.28 per ounce of beer. Yeah, see you there.

Battledish: Miami – Saturday, October 5th from 2pm-6pm
If you’re the type to send back your plate to the kitchen in a restaurant because your steak wasn’t seasoned properly, then maybe this is the event for you. Dishcrawl Miami is hosting this competition in Miami Beach where we, the foodies, can vote for our favorite chef. Six local cooks will whip up a signature dish and accompanying cocktail, each at $5, to earn our approval. Visit dishcrawl.com for details on the chefs competing and to purchase your tickets.
Wynwood Tapas Journey – ends Sunday, October 6th
For $20 you can relive your semester abroad in Barcelona during the final weekend of the Wynwood Tapas Journey. You will enjoy 3 small dishes from ten restaurants in the Wynwood and Downtown areas while getting a tour of the Miami culinary scene. Top it off with an Estrella Damm, Spain’s best-known brand of beer. You must be 21+ years to participate.
Miami Springs Farmers Market – Saturday, October 5th from 9am-1pm
Head over to Miami Springs this Saturday for the first farmers market of the season. Similar to our weekly campus market near the Green (which starts next week), you can expect to buy fresh produce, baked goods, vegan foods and flowers. It is located at the first block of Curtiss Parkway median from the Circle to Cross St.
Aventura Mall Chocolate Festival – Sunday, October 6th from 12pm-4pm
Apparently there is a Guiness World Record for the Largest Chocolate Mousse, which weighed 313 pounds. On Sunday at Aventura Mall, Executive Chefs Rick Chiavari from Turnberry Ocean Colony and Danny Malone from Turnberry Isle Miami will attempt to break this record. This feat will require more than a few ingredients from your pantry. The two chefs are expected to use 24 eggs, 108 pounds of chocolate, 20 pounds of sugar, 66 pounds of butter, 50 quarts of heavy cream and 5 gallons of milk. Besides this main spectacle of a dessert, onlookers can satiate their sweet tooth by purchasing sweets from other participants such as BC Café/Tacos, Churro Mania, Clarabelles, Crepemaker, Dolce Peccati and Fireman Derricks Pies. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Children’s Craniofacial Association.
