Folk rocker Mike Acerbo released his debut album, The Search, on February 14, 2012.
Following ten years and plenty of troubles, he leads us through his most intimate thoughts. Themes of loss, love, and the search for self make the album both personal and universal. The wide variety and musical arrangement of the songs channel folk-rock of the likes of Dispatch and Guster and at the same time an essence similar to Florence + the Machine.
The Search leads listeners through a journey. It is at once powerful and subtle, in great part due to its combination of varied musical instruments (including cellos, piano, and guitars) and strong vocals.
Acerbo’s songs capture several tragic losses he suffered (of his mom, brother, and childhood friend) and although melancholy, they have a hint of optimism. The powerful emotions he encountered inspired him, and music became his refuge and his escape.
Acerbo moved to New York City to pursue a music career.
“There was a point, when I felt so alone with my troubles, that all I had were the quiet hours after midnight and a song,” he explains. “I wrote all the time, to get away from myself and to express the struggle I was going through. I had stories to tell and songs were the best way I knew how to get them out.”
He gives listeners an insight into the troubled times he experienced and how he rose above them.
