Transitioning to Fall Fashion

Changing colors, falling leaves and cooler temperatures signal the return of fall—for everyone except those of us who live in Miami.

Even so, the season brings new trends to explore, possibly slightly altered so we don’t asphyxiate in the sun. This is your guide to the good, not-so-bad, and not at all ugly fashion trends of Fall 2019. Hopefully you’ll find some inspiration to add to your wardrobe.

Look through your closet. You may be surprised to see what you can revamp. Thrifting is also a great option, especially if you’re into sustainability. Stroll through the Wedneday farmers’ market and stop by UThrift, or venture out in the city to see what’s available. Fall is a time to have fun with fashion!

Aesthetics

Neon and tye-dye were fun for the summer, but this fall, opt for whites and neutrals. Western and prints will be the themes spicing up our style in the coming months.

If the constant echo of ‘Old Town Road’ hasn’t indicated it already, there is a brewing fascination into the mystique of the Wild West. Fringe, cowboy boots and chaps flooded Coachella this year and will continue to thrive this fall.

This aesthetic lets us play with various materials. To get the look, throw on a suede or satin top and pair it with some leather bottoms. Don’t be afraid to add an animal print, like cow or leopard, to an ensemble. Even try going bold with a denim-on-denim ’fit! And don’t forget– flannel is always a staple.

Now that we’ve covered overarching themes, let’s focus on specifics – starting from the top.

Hats

Beanies, while maybe not so useful Miami, can add a pop of color to level-up a basic outfit. Or, you could grab a bucket hat to fully embrace your ’90s fantasy. Give these hats a modern twist by playing with textures, faux fur and leather.

Jewelry

Layer gold chains with tortoiseshell earrings for a simple, versatile look. For a unique touch this fall, go for thick chain-link necklaces, clear jewelry and pearls

Tops

The power sleeves of the 80’s are reemerging—sans the shoulder pads, thankfully. But when it comes to the trending decade, tops can be hit or miss.

The Miami heat can make sweaters challenging. Instead, opt for light or lacey cardigans. In terms of color, look out for muted mint green and lavender as popular shades for this season.

Jackets

Using a jacket to layer adds character to an outfit and can serve as the stand-out piece. Again, we’re in Miami, but if you’re feeling it try a trench coat or long, belted leather jacket. A blazer or puffer jacket is an essential fall aesthetic piece and oversized jackets are very in, according to HuffPost.com

Bottoms

This is your chance to play with shape and material. Loosen up with wide-leg or flared pants. Maybe even have a cargo moment. Corduroy and distressed denim add a little extra character to an outfit as well.

Shoes

Sorry to say this, but it’s time to lay your chunky Fila sneakers to rest. This is not to say the “dad sneaker” trend is necessarily out, but if Forrest Gump taught us anything, it’s that the Nike Cortez sneaker is classic and super chic. Try to incorporate some color or a retro design into your footwear. Above all, boots are key during the fall. Chelsea, combat and platforms are the main trends to look out for. For cooler options, try chunky platformed sandals and breathable materials.
