Eat Your (Healthy) Heart Out This Food Day


Finding fresh, healthy food on the University of Miami campus can be quite the mission. Sure, the food court has a Market Square salad bar, but they also have a Wendy’s, a Panda Express and a Salsarita’s. And hello, Chartwells anyone?

So, attention Health Conscious Students of the University of Miami: this Wednesday, October 24th, is Food Day, a nation-wide dedication to the healthy and affordable food movement currently spreading the country. In celebration of Food Day, UM will host several events addressing the movement:

1)   Well ‘Canes Farmers’ Market: Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. by the Green, the Farmers’ Market, an initiative of the Office of Human Resources and Student Government, will sell fresh fruits and veggies, breads, cheeses, artisanal foods, and local goods.

2)   Community Food Organization Fair: Taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the UC Lower Lounge, the fair will showcase nonprofits and UM campus groups with eco-friendly missions.

3)   Film Screening and Discussion: The Wesley CAS gallery will screen Food Stamped, the documentary feature that follows a couple’s quest to eat healthy while on Food Stamps, a difficult endeavor in America’s currently broken food system. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., with light refreshments being offered by Green Gables Café beforehand.
