Creative Workouts

For many UM fitness enthusiasts, a new school year means a new workout routine. Students flock to the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center in hopes of finding a regimen that will tighten and tone every part of the body. If the usual weights and treadmills aren’t exciting enough for you, below are a bevy of some unusual workouts that will inspire you to keep fit throughout the year.Paddle Boarding
This workout focuses on balance from the core as well as arm strength. Someone stands on a large surfboard and moves using a paddle, which is no different from a kayaking paddle. The top of the board has a special gripping material to improve balance. On a calm day, Key Biscayne offers the perfect scenic route along downtown Miami for this workout. Key Biscayne offers multiple rental locations for paddle boarding. Key Biscayne Stand Up Paddle Boards: Hobie Beach, Virginia Key, Key Biscayne, FL 33149, right before Miami Sea Aquarium. $20-30 for a one hour rental. 786-301-3557.Anti-Gravity Yoga
Yoga is a form of exercise that focuses on centering the mind, body and soul. However, it can often be painful for anyone attempting these stretches the first time around. A new type, anti-gravity yoga, makes this ancient teaching fun and playful. One performs the yoga poses above the ground on hammocks. The poses resemble aerial acrobatic tricks. Everything is performed slowly and gracefully. Best of all, it will prepare you to enter the yoga track more smoothly. Crunch Gym: 1259 Washington Ave., Miami Beach, FL 33139. $34 per class or $69 per month for gym membership. 305-674-8222.

Pole Dancing
Pole Dancing has existed for ages, but today it is viewed as one of the most effective workouts. When performed in heels, it can strengthen your leg muscles significantly. Usually, classes are taught in dimly-lit rooms with sensual music. Even if you are not advanced, or graceful, a great body stretch is guaranteed. Pole Fitness Miami: 4018 Aurora St, Coral Gables, Fl 33146. $25 per class. 305-801-3951.

Yoga on a Paddle Board
A combination of surfing, paddle boarding and yoga, this workout will bring you to truly feel one with nature. Performed in calm waters, this workout will force you to concentrate on your balance, at risk of falling into the water. This full-body workout challenges you to focus and hold positions on a paddle board. If done correctly, it can be incredibly relaxing as well. Adventure Sports Miami: Classes held in Matheson Hammock Park, 9610 Old Cutler Rd., Miami, FL 33156. $40 for class and rentals. 305-591-3559.
