Last weekend’s two sold out shows at The Fillmore in Miami Beach marked the halfway point of DJ Flume’s, extensive world tour, stretching across New Zealand, the States, Europe and his homeland, Australia. The tour has further promoted his already hugely successful sophomore album, Skin.
Friday and Saturday nights saw eager fans swarming to witness this hot artist perform. Inside The Fillmore, openers Charles Murdoch and Hermitude set the vibe and hyped up the crowd before the main act. Despite the fantastic sets from both openers, no amount of anticipation could have prepared concert-goers for the jaw dropping performance that would follow.
Flume’s appearance on stage was greeted with a roaring applause turned dance party turned shouting lyrics turned dance party again. The balance between new and old songs kept his more recently acquired fan base engaged, without leaving longtime fans feeling shortchanged. Flume opened the show playing ‘Holdin On’, a hit from his self-titled debut album. He seamlessly transitioned between songs, being sure to include crowd pleasers ‘Never Be Like You’ and ‘Say It’. Remixes to Lorde’s ‘Tennis Court’ and ODESZA’s ‘Say My Name’ caught the attention those attendees less familiar with Flume’s artistry.
The show itself had something for everyone. EDM lovers gawked at the sheer talent, while music enthusiasts immersed themselves in the dancing, feel-good environment. The light show accompanying the performance ensured that there was nothing left to be desired. The lighting and backdrop were synchronized to the beat drops, drums, and melodic changes perfectly. Florescent colors flashed along suspended lights forming various shapes. Flume’s DJ booth was decked out with lights to mirror the ones hanging above. Behind him were animations with graphics illustrating the lyrical components of his songs. These futuristic-looking visuals in combination with the dynamic lighting transported the crowd to a new and captivating, yet intimate environment. Everything from the vivid colors to the rapid succession of patterns made for an exhilarating experience.
The entire production was nothing short of brilliant. Flume’s unbarred interpretation of EDM has granted copious amounts of success thus far. Flume’s world tour will wrap up by the year’s close. Two back-to-back, sold out shows in Miami suggest that we ought to keep our eyes peeled for all that is to come from this talented performer.
