Class Fashion: Your Comfortable Guide to Style

Living in Miami amongst super models and celebrities, you are probably used to reading about fashion in terms of glitz and glamour. When you look at fashion on a traditional college campus, over-the-top fashion isn’t likely to be your first thought. But what happens when you are a college student but also in Miami? Well, that is exactly what we are discussing: what is comfortable enough for class, but fashionable enough for Miami.

Glancing throughout the UM campus you are going to see a true range of fashion. From students throwing on the first thing they see in their closet for their 8 a.m., to business students presenting in full-out suits, you never really know what to expect!

With many covid restrictions being lifted this school year, there has been a massive influx of people on campus. This influx of people gave me the insight I needed to disect our campus fashion trends. Here are the top 3 campus fashion trends I’ve noticed:

1. Athleisure

Athleisure is taking over college campuses around the country, and the University of Miami is not an exception. Workout attire that doubles as a fashion statement is chefs kiss. And the best part? It works for both guys and girls!

What is better than a matching leggings set or basketball shorts and a muscle tee? The answer: nothing. Athleisure is great because it’s not just cute, it is also super comfortable. Wear it to class, wear it to the gym, wear it to run errands: you can do it all!

Bella Loucas said her go-to outfit consists of Lululemon leggings and a tank top. “It’s really comfortable and it’s fitting for the Miami heat,” Loucas said.

2. Jorts

This may seem a little controversial, as jean shorts have been heavily criticized in recent years, but they are a campus favorite, at least so it seems.

Both guys and girls alike have dabbled in jean shorts, although it seems more popular amongst the female population. Jorts are a pretty standard article of clothing when living in a place like Miami. They keeps you cool while still looking put together. What more is there to ask for?

3. Sweatshirts

This observation baffled me a little. There are an absurd amount of people sporting around campus in sweatshirts. I cant lie, it looks good, but how do these people not die from a heat stroke?

It may be extremely hot outside but once you get into the lecture halls, I understand the need for a sweatshirt. They are versatile, cute, and channeling streetwear.

Ximena Mendoza said that sweatshirts are perfect because she is always in labs. “As a Miami/ Cuban local, the weather doesn’t bother, so wearing a sweatshirt around campus is my go to,” Mendoza said.

Athleisure, jorts and sweatshirts may be the top three notable articles of clothing worn by our peers, but of course there are some other honorable mentions: Nike Airforce Ones, University of Miami merch and designer everything. So, there you have it: what to wear to maintain comfortability but also achieve fashionability.
