University of Miami African Students Union presents “Owambe: A Fashion Show” at 6 p.m. April 13 on the Newman Alumni Center.
“Owambe is a term coined by the Yoruba people of Nigeria,” Olujohungbe.
Africa Students Union, an organization at the University of Miami, organizes their annual fashion show showcasing various designs from different regions in Africa. ASU is dedicated to bring awareness and knowledge on the issues Africa faces to the University of Miami and its students. According to ASU President Olumayowa Olujohungbe, ASU strives to address misconceptions about Africa by providing insight into the cultural diversity on the African continent, while at the same time being representative of UM students from the continent of Africa.
“Owambe is a term coined by the Yoruba people of Nigeria,” says Olujohungbe. She explains the meaning of Owambe by furthering describing it as an extravagant party filled with music, dancing and food.
Olujohungbe, a public health and Spanish major, says this will be her last event as the organization’s president.
“I’m super excited to share what we’ve been working on all semester,” she adds.
Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. with an ample array of food and drinks to indulge in and doors will open promptly at 7 p.m. in the Newman Alumni Center.
