The Windy City, Chiraq, or White Sox City are common terms for the beloved and my childhood city, sweet home Chicago. The often misunderstood Midwest gem, Chicago, is the city of mouthwatering food, amazing sports teams and the best blues around. For your next Second City excursion, you absolutely need to check out these sights and sounds of Chi-Town.
Food
Pizza, hot dogs and popcorn are a staple of Chicago cuisine. For the best deep dish pizza around, head to Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s pizza. This savory classic is made with the stretchiest cheese known to man. Just one slice with a can of “pop” ( or soda for non-Midwesterns) and you’ll be stretched across your chair begging for more.
You can never go wrong with a juicy “hawt” dog from Portillo’s or Chicago’s Dog House. These fully customizable dogs are perfect with ketchup, relish, pickles and onions. After a long day at work in the city, hot dogs make for the perfect comfort food and insta pic.
Garrett’s is the most famous popcorn joint in town. Since 1949, creative geniuses have been making the best corn in Chiberia. I highly recommend the Chicago mix, a combination of caramel and cheese corn. Your inner child will come out and you’ll find yourself unable to stop licking your fingers as you dive into this Chicago classic. I go for the small because I know I will always want more!

Sights
I know you didn’t come to Chicago just to eat the most decadent food in the Midwest! This richly historical city is filled with a bubbling art scene and unbelievable skyscrapers.
For great artwork, go to The Art Institute of Chicago. The Alma Mater of Walt Disney and home to 46 Claude Monet art pieces, the institute is nestled near Chicago’s famous Grant Park. Just a short walk from the museum is the famous Bean or Cloud Gate — the name differs depending on who you ask. Known by locals as the place where high school kids party on St. Patrick’s Day, this Chicago favorite is perfect for your next artsy vsco post.
For unforgettable views, check out the Skydeck Chicago. It’s is located on the 103rd floor of the Sears Tower and is a fully glassed box that allows you to venture out onto the edge of the building while being safely held underneath.
Music
So you’ve seen the views and dived into a delicious meal, why not hear the music that made Chicago.
Buddy Guy’s Legends is Chicago’s classic blues house. Buddy Guy and his friends play here 7 days a week at this New-Orleans-inspired joint. If you’re looking for blues legends, you won’t be disappointed.
For a 21+ crowd, Blue Chicago is a premier jazz and blues hall that keeps people coming back for more. It’s located practically on Lake Michigan so going to the beach and hitting up this club is always the move.
Of course, Chicago is known for great blues but don’t forget — Lollapalooza is coming up! This 3-day music festival combines rap, EDM, punk and pop into one wild weekend. It sometimes rains during Lolla so don’t be alarmed if a huge mud pit opens up and takes over the park — and ruins your shoes.
Chicago is my true hometown. With something for everyone, this city keeps giving families and young people an unforgettable time.
Whether you want to go to the beach all day or take an architectural tour through the Chicago River, The Windy City is the city for you.
