We’re all a little guilty of splurging on something we convince ourselves we need. But
when we spend hundreds or even thousands on clothing, what are we actually paying for? Sometimes it’s materials, craftsmanship and quality. Other times, it’s the name, the image and the feeling of exclusivity that comes with it.

How Much is Too Much

We’re all a little guilty of splurging on a shopping haul. Maybe it’s a new pair of shoes we’ve been thinking about for months, a new designer bag that feels like a “need” or a $200 T-shirt we convince ourselves we will wear forever. But at what point are we paying for the clothes themselves and at what point are we paying for the name on the tag? There is a strange idea in fashion that the more expensive something is, the better it must be. But that’s usually not the case. Sometimes spending more really does mean getting better materials, craftsmanship and something that will last longer. Other times, we tend to pay for the logo, designer name and most importantly, exclusivity.

Take Uggs and Costco’s Kirkland version of the classic sheepskin boot. Uggs have become one of those instantly recognizable fashion items while Costco’s version has been praised as a much cheaper alternative. Even though they may look nearly identical, there’s still a significant price difference between the two. Both boots are made with similar materials, including sheepskin and shearing, making the price difference even more interesting. While there are some differences in construction and design, the materials themselves are not drastically different. Research from a 2025 study of participants ages 18 to 60 also found a strong positive correlation between brand loyalty and willingness to pay more, suggesting that consumers may be willing to spend more on products from brands they already trust. So how much are we really paying for the product, and how much for the brand behind it?

The Influence of Influence

“When I’m shopping, I’ll look at what my favorite influencers are wearing for inspiration and to see what’s trending,” said Hudson McDonald, a freshman at the University of Miami.

The question becomes more complicated when social media gets involved. Fashion is no longer something we only see in magazines or notice in public. Instead, there is always another “must- have” item, another trend or another influencer showing us what they just bought on social media platforms like TikTok. Suddenly, the $200 T shirt we had never heard of yesterday feels like something everyone owns.

In this developing technological world, things are changing everyday. In recent years there have been a significant number of smaller clothing companies launched by social media influencers. These companies capitalize on the exclusive nature of their product and have increasingly introduced “drops,” using limited availability to encourage purchases. These limited-edition opportunities have always been around, but now it’s much more common. Limited-edition collections, countdowns and products that are only available for a short amount of time make consumers feel like they need to buy something before it disappears. The pressure is not necessarily that we actually need that item but instead that we might never get another chance.

What are we really buying

This is where “how much is too much” becomes personal. Everyone has a different limit and for one person, spending $500 on a jacket might seem completely unreasonable, while for another it could be considered a worthwhile investment. Ultimately, a higher price can mean better fabric and construction, but it can also reflect something less tangible: the value we place on exclusivity. Research from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business found that people were willing to pay more for a T-shirt when they knew other people wanted it but could not have it. In one experiment, the median amount participants were willing to pay doubled when some participants were excluded from purchasing the item, creating scarcity. A recognizable brand or even influencer spends years creating an image that consumers want to be a part of. So,
when we pay more for a product, are we buying the physical item itself, or are we also buying into the image and exclusivity surrounding it?

This is also why dupes have become so popular. If someone can buy a $40 bag that looks almost exactly like a $1000 designer bag, what are they really missing? In some cases, the higher price is justified by better materials, construction or craftsmanship. But at what point does the price stop reflecting quality and start reflecting the brand name? Sometimes the difference is obvious when feeling the material or construction, but other times the biggest difference is simply the label. And if nobody knows which one you are wearing, does the difference really matter?

Perhaps the bigger question is not how much we spend or whether the bag is real or fake, but whether we are losing what makes fashion personal in the first place. Individuality.

Instead of buying the newest version of whatever is trending, some students are looking for older pieces that feel more personal. Vintage shopping makes it possible to find something that not everyone else has and oftentimes, the best pieces have nothing to do with what is actually trending.

“I’ve started enjoying finding more unique pieces through Depop and vintage shopping,” said senior psychology major Anika Pande. “It’s helped me figure out my own style instead of just buying what’s trending.

Beyond the algorithm

We live in a world full of inspiration. Content is constantly being forced down our throats through TikTok, mood boards, Pinterest, Instagram and even “get ready with me” videos. We are surrounded by other people’s tastes so often that sometimes it becomes difficult to figure out what our own taste actually is. We have started to confuse having good taste with having the right things. We save the same outfits, buy the same bags and want the same shoes because we have been told they are fashionable and it gives us a sense of “fitting in.” But personal style should not necessarily be about what gets the most likes or what everyone else is buying.

Maybe real taste is the things you like that you don’t feel like you need to share. The clothes sitting on your private wish-list, the vintage jacket that no one else understands. The outfit you put together simply because you like it, not because you saw it on someone else first.

There will probably never be a universal answer to how much is too much to spend on clothing. But before buying the next “must-have,” maybe the better question is whether we actually want it or if we’re being convinced we do.
