Since when is Miami a doughnuts city? Not sure when the trend began, but follow the doughnut balloons that towered over The Wynwood Yard and step into a world of trays and trays of doughnuts. If you’re like me and you’re thinking ‘I thought doughnuts were whatever Dunkin Donuts has,’ then we’re both wrong. Surrounded by Christmas lights, too many tents to count and smells that flooded my nose, the 2016 Donuts! festival brought together all of Miami’s traditional and newest doughnut vendors for locals to sample a huge range of flavors to make you full until the next day. Here are some that I’m still raving about.
Bunnie Cakes
Although I’m not much of a vegan, what attracted me most to this tent was how decorated and adorable everything was. From stickers that said “We go together like cupcakes and frosting” to ‘Chill Pill’ sweets, it was hard not to try one of everything. Founded in 2009, Bunnie Cakes is the only vegan, kosher and gluten free bakery in Miami and was voted Miami’s best vegan bakery in 2013 by Miami New Times and featured on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars. Besides the cute decorations, they offered flavors like ‘Dulce No Leche’ and Passion Fruit, among many other unique choices to choose from.

Donut Divas
Lucky for us at the University of Miami, we’re familiar with this one. Donut Divas is basically the heaven of all fried things but for this festival, they featured their infamous Red Velvet Fried Oreos. Is your mouth watering yet?

Parlour
They may not be in the area, but going all the way to Plantation for Parlour might not be a bad idea. The vegan bakery had donuts good enough to make me ask more than once, “Are these really vegan?” With donuts like Cake Batter and Butterbeer, it was hard not to ask for a million and not feel bad for taking the last of the batch.

Beaker & Gray
Right in Wynwood, and not a bad place for date-night, Beaker & Gray is a restaurant in Wynwood that took the night to feature only their desserts. What was a five second hesitation turned into a quick ‘yum’ as my taste buds experienced beets, coconut banana, chocolate sour cream, and matcha latte doughnuts. If you’re going to go out of your comfort zone with some doughnuts, this is the place to go.

Rhino Doughnuts and Coffee
“Can I have one of everything?” is word-for-word what every single person was asking to Rhino Doughnuts and Coffee. By far, this was my favorite place to get doughnuts from. Their featured desserts included Strawberry Fields, Kentucky Bourbon Bacon, Oreo Peanut Butter Cup and Creme Brûlée. Excusez-moi? Even if they looked like the traditional doughnut shape, the flavors were insane – yes, even the bacon one. Unfortunately, they are all the way in Fort Lauderdale but, hands down, the trip is worth it.
